Produced by the Telluride Society for Jazz and generously supported by Raynier Institute and Foundation, Dworbell Inc., Telluride Foundation, Western Jazz Presenters Network and the National Endowment for the Arts we are pleased to share the edition of a masterclass and a community outreach workshop during the festival.
Both events are free and open to the public.

A masterclass featuring headliner Terence Blanchard and jazz legend Rufus Reid will be held on Friday, August 12 at 10:00 am at the Sheridan Opera House. The masterclass will focus on the topic of “How Jazz Is Made”. Terence and Rufus will share stories and music in an interactive format.
Improvisation in Jazz Workshop
Sunday, August 14 at 10:15 am - Society Stage at Elks Park
On Sunday, August 14 at 10:15 am on the Society Stage at Elks Park vibraphonist Joel Ross will team up with the percussion section from Caleb Chapman’s Crescent Super Band to host a community outreach workshop focusing on “Improvisation in Jazz”. Joel and the percussion section from Caleb Chapman’s Crescent Super Band will improvise on classic jazz standards followed by a brief discussion.
Joel Ross’ appearance at this year’s Telluride Jazz Festival is part of a tour organized by the Western Jazz Presenters Network and funded, in part, by the National Endowment for the Arts.
Executive Director of the Telluride Society for Jazz, Peter Bell, explains, “you can hear a jazz musician play the same tunes many times and it will never be exactly the same. Their mood, their accompanists and the reactions from the audience shape how they interpret a tune at any given performance. There’s no other art form with such spontaneity.”
This project is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts via the Western Jazz Presenters Network.
