Saturday, August 13 at 1:30 pm (Main Stage)

By his own reckoning, Rufus Reid is “the evolving bassist.” The evolution got underway when he first picked up an instrument — not the bass, but a trumpet. Once the bass commanded his attention while serving in the US Air Force, he has since become one of the international jazz community’s stellar figures as not only a performer, but as a composer and educator. His bass tutelage includes studying with mentors in the Seattle and Chicago Symphonies, and classical influences infuse his work. His book, The Evolving Bassist (Myriad Limited, 1974), remains the industry standard for double bass methodology. Rufus has earned numerous Grammy nominations and is also known for his work on recordings with Dexter Gordon, Andrew Hill, The Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Quartet, Kenny Barron, Stan Getz, J. J. Johnson, Lee Konitz, Jack DeJohnette and many others. His massive reputation precedes him. Let’s join in the evolution.
