There is something about the mood and the feel of Latin jazz, with its enticing rhythms and percussion-forward sound that takes the listener on a journey. Conguero Poncho Sanchez has been one of the primary torchbearers of the Latin jazz tradition for more than three decades, elevated by idols and mentors Tito Puente and Cal Tjader. But his influences extend beyond that branch on the jazz tree and include, among many others, the great John Coltrane. In fact, at the age of 11, Poncho’ first record purchased with his own money was ‘Trane’s 1962 classic, “Coltrane.” His latest record pays homage to the legendary saxman. “Trane’s Delight,” delves into Coltrane’s work and influence with a brilliant topcoat of Poncho’s distinctive touch. A Grammy award winner for 1999’s “Latin Soul,” Poncho easily stands shoulder to shoulder with the very musicians he idolized growing up in Los Angeles. Now, it is he who influences others.
