Tuba Skinny

Close your eyes as you listen to this traditional jazz band and you can transport yourself to Royal Street in the French Quarter of New Orleans. Though they’ve released nearly a dozen records and have toured the world, picking up fans like R. Crumb and Neil Gaiman along the way, you can still find Tuba Skinny on the streets of their adopted hometown, cranking out the sounds of the 1920s and ‘30s as tourists amble by. It’s that connection with audiences they crave, so they’ll set up shop on the streets of any city they play. It is on the streets where what would become Tuba Skinny learned to not only become accomplished musicians, but to literally survive in a city ravaged by Katrina, playing a range of styles from old-time mountain music to Balkan folk and more. Today, they are a trad jazz band and a damn good one. Chances are good they’ll play on Colorado Avenue, too.
