Chris Illingworth’s virtuoso piano playing lures you in and before you know it, you’re immersed in songs that are atmospherically beautiful and utterly transporting. The two other legs of this Manchester, England-based trio are bassist Nick Blacka and drummer Rob Turner, who each offer complexity and intricate phrasing to GoGo Penguin’s hypnotic music. Their intriguing blend of jazz and electronica is fresh and exciting. GoGo Penguin’s debut record, v2.0 garnered the band a Mercury Prize Album of the Year in 2014, and after signing to Blue Note Records in 2016, they released Man Made Object. Their newest release is A Humdrum Star. Each new record marks deeper explorations in a hard-to-categorize expression of their musical ideas. They are utterly mesmerizing in a live setting, the interplay between these three, gifted musicians as tightly woven as a magic carpet. The destination is wherever the music takes you.
