The Telluride Student All-Stars Jazz Ensemble promises to captivate audiences with their vibrant music, proving that the future of jazz is brighter than ever!

The purpose of the program is to inspire and guide young musicians who are poised to pursue their education in jazz and are at the level to begin their professional careers. The age range of students is generally between fifteen and twenty-one years. Education, room and board is provided free of charge upon acceptance to the program. The only cost to the students is transportation to and from Telluride. Instructors this year include long time Telluride Jazz veteran Josh Quinlan, and acclaimed trumpet player and acquaintant, Terrel Stafford.

In recent years, many former Telluride Student All-Stars students have ascended to professional music careers and returned as featured acts on the Main Stage including this year’s All-Star alum Annie Booth. The Telluride Student All-Stars Jazz Ensemble Scholarship Program is supported by individual contributions, grants, and the generous Dworbell, Inc. sponsorship.

Meet the Instructors: Josh Quinlan and Terell Stafford

This exciting saxophonist and composer, Josh Quinlan, is no stranger to Telluride. Josh served for years as co-director of the Telluride Jazz Celebration educational program. Now teaching in Costa Rica where he is Professor of saxophone at National University of Costa Rica (La Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica), Josh continues conveying his love of music to eager students. He has held teaching positions in the U.S. at the University of Colorado, music faculty member at Denver School of the Arts, Director of Education for the Colorado nonprofit Gift of Jazz, and as Director of the Dazzle Recordings label.

Joining the all star program as an instructor, is a long-time collaborator of Josh, Terell Stafford, on trumpet. Terell Stafford, acclaimed trumpet player based in New York, has been hailed as “one of the great players of our time, a fabulous trumpet player” by piano legend McCoy Tyner. Stafford is recognized as an incredibly gifted and versatile player, he combines a deep love of melody with his own brand of spirited and adventurous lyricism. Stafford’s exceptionally expressive and well defined musical career has allowed him to dance in and around the rich trumpet tradition of his predecessors while making his own inroads.

Both of the Telluride Jazz All-Star Ensemble instructors will be playing on the main stage as well. Enjoy the Josh Quinlan Quartet Featuring Terrell Stafford on Sunday, August 13 at 2:30 pm on the Main Stage.

Returning on the Main Stage for 2023: All-Star alum - Annie Booth

Composer, pianist and educator, Annie Booth, is the definition of versatile. This award-winning musician is driven by curiosity and buoyed by her fearsome chops. First playing on the main stage in 2010, as part of the Telluride Jazz Student All-Star program, she is a testament to the program itself. She writes everything from works for small group jazz to chamber music. Her latest studio album, Flowers Of Evil, is an original song cycle of the poetry of 19th century French poet Charles Baudelaire, composed for 11-piece chamber-jazz group. For our mountain gathering, Annie has assembled a top-flight sextet for what will be two very unforgettable sets!

Don't miss this electrifying return of this jazz sensation as she graces both the main stage and the intimate setting of the Elks at Jazz After Dark.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 11, 2023 AT 1:50 PM (MAIN STAGE)
