Shamarr Allen knows how to entertain. As a youth, he played the streets of the French Quarter in his native New Orleans with Tuba Fats. His devotion to learning his instrument drew numerous musicians to take him under their wings, giving him the mentorship and lessons this deeply talented trumpeter deserved. He flourished under that tutelage. He has been a part of NOLA’s best brass outfits, including Hot 8 Brass Band, Rebirth Brass Band, Lil’ Rascals, Treme and others. And he has returned the favor of music education by mentoring young musicians, conducting a weekly clinic at Sound Café to middle- and high-school students who have a desire to dive into the bottomless — and bountiful — well of jazz music.
