A Ferguson, Missouri native, trumpeter Keyon Harrold channeled the upheaval and demands for justice following the 2014 police shooting there of a young Black man, Michael Brown, an incident that sparked years of protest in the US as police killings of black Americans mounted. The record that arose from that flashpoint in history, The Mugician, is a sweeping, musical statement abetted by artists such as Robert Glasper, Gary Clark Jr. and Big K.R.I.T., who lend a diverse sound to Keyon’s sharp songwriting sensibilities and virtuoso trumpet playing. His triumph is in his steadfast belief that the future will be brighter. We stand with Keyon for justice and for hope.
