As long as vocalist Joslyn Hampton and her powerhouse of a band are working, soul and funk will continue to thrill and move booties. Ms. Hampton may very well make you think of the great Chaka Khan, and with Carter Scofield, (guitar), Tyler Papierniak, (bass), Rashawn Fleming, (drums), Jacob O’Donnell,( saxophone), and Will Doty, (keys) keeping the engine stoked, the Rufus comparisons will be unavoidable.
The band’s latest record, Bona Fide, is indeed a recording of their bona fides in the realm of funky grooves and soaring vocals, but when they tackle the George Harrison deep cut, Long, Long, Long, the Sweet Compression’s depth of soul absolutely shines.
