If you ever meet the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ bassist, Flea, thank him for Cory Wong’s headfirst dive into music. The Minneapolis-based guitarist, bassist and composer didn’t actually head down the jazz path at first. With the Peppers and Primus as early influences, he started a punk band, but by the late 2000’s delved seriously into jazz. Fans of Vulfpeck will know his funky guitar work from his collaboration with that band. In fact, he’s been a factor in numerous notable groups, including Dave Koz, Metropole Orkest, Stephen Colbert’s house band, Stay Human, and with Chris Thile’s band on the radio program, Live From Here. In 2020, Cory got a Grammy nod for Meditations, a new-age recording he did in partnership with Jon Batiste. Do check out his YouTube variety show Cory Wong and the Wongnotes. It’s a lively offering of sketches, interviews and, of course, music performed by his thrilling ensemble. We wonder, what can’t Cory Wong do?
