The 34th Annual Telluride Jazz Celebration welcomes festival guest of honor Toshiko Akiyoshi and The Stanley Clarke Band featuring Hiromi

• Toshiko Akiyoshi, a Japanese American jazz pianist, composer and bandleader is one of the most influential and successful female instrumentalists of her generation in jazz. Named in 2007 as an NEA Jazz Master by the U.S. National Endowment for the Arts and nominated for 14 Grammy Awards, Akiyoshi is a celebrated musician who will appear on stage in Telluride for the first time in three decades.

• Akiyoshi’s music is lauded for its masterful blending of atmosphere and swirling textures with traditional jazz figures, rich in Japanese influence. She is said to be one of the few jazz composer/arrangers whose name could be seriously mentioned in the company of Duke Ellington, Eddie Sauter and Gil Evans.

• Hiromi has been heralded as one of the brightest new lights on the piano jazz landscape since the release of Another Mind, her 2003 debut recording. Six years and four critically acclaimed albums later, she has not only lived up to the initial praise for her early efforts but surpassed it entirely, thanks in large part to live performances that spotlight her boundless talent, energy and artistic vision.

• Telluride Jazz Celebration welcomes Hiromi to the Town Park stage for the first time in festival history.

• The scheduled lineup featuring these heralded Asian artists includes:
Saturday, August 7 | Telluride Town Park Stage | 2-2:50 p.m. Toshiko Akiyoshi and Lew Tabackin Quartet | 4:20-5:20 p.m. Toshiko Akiyoshi with the Crescent Super Band | 7 p.m. The Stanley Clarke Band featuring Hiromi

Sunday, August 8 | Elks Park, Raynier Free Stage | 10:30-11:30 a.m. Panel Discussion with Toshiko Akiyoshi, Jackie Ryan, Larry Coryell, Raul Midón, Dmitri Matheny and Norman Provizer
