thm-panchoPoncho Sanchez & His Latin Jazz Band · Guest of Honor

Grammy Award-winning conguero and Jazz percussionist Poncho Sanchez has over three decades of experience as a bandleader and influential sideman next to Chano Pozo and Dizzy Gillespie. With his Los Angeles upbringing immediately immersing him into an unusual cross section of sounds from straight ahead Jazz, Latin, and American Soul, it was Coltrane, Davis and Mongo Santamaria that raised him, and instigated self-taught endeavors into guitar, flute, drums, timbales and eventually congas. Poncho landed a spot in the Latin legend Cal Tjader’s band in 1975, and seven years later signed to Concord Records where he has released two dozen critically acclaimed albums since, including the Grammy winning Concord Picante label album Latin Soul in 2000. www.ponchosanchez.com

Celebrating their 20th anniversary as modern day rulers of old school funk, the seven-piece Brooklyn-based juggernaut Lettuce recently dropped their third studio album Fly—a decidedly raging slab of relentless groove, hyper-charged syncopation and psychedelicized soul anthems. Having blown up stages from coast to coast last year, ranging from The Fillmore in San Francisco to Terminal 5 in New York City, Lettuce entered Brooklyn recording studio The Bunker this winter with a fresh batch of road-tested material and a revitalized sound honed razor sharp by a year spent on the road. “We’re more together and set to crush than ever before,” says drummer and chief songwriter Adam Deitch. www.lettucefunk.com

thm-dragonsmokeDragon Smoke

Dragon Smoke was formed as part of the New Orleans Jazz Fest tradition known as the “Superjam”. The “Superjam” idea is to put together a band of people who don’t normally play together and see what happens. With the dual vocals of Ivan Neville-Vocals/Keyboards (Neville Bros.) and Eric Lindell-Vocals/Guitar, matched with the Galactic rhythm section stars Stanton Moore-Drums and Rob Mecurio-Base, the band quickly realized, “We are on to something” and has played every Jazz Fest since it’s inception in 2003. The music centers with Lindell’s blue-eyed soul, Neville’s funk and R&B, and Galactic’s groove. Besides a few trips to the West Coast, this band has been strickly playing in New Orleans. With all in the band being a leader on their own, it is rare to get this band together. And when it does, it shows that these guys are really having FUN! Facebook Page

Groupo FantasmaGrupo Fantasma

Grupo has been praised as one of the most important independent acts in the Latin genre, and has continually defied expectations to create one of the most unique voices in music today. In 2011 they garnered further acclaim by winning a Grammy, their second such nomination, for their self-produced release El Existential on Nat Geo Music, which the Wall Street Journal called “Latin music both new and traditional…vibrant fusions that transcend easy classification.” Based in Austin, Texas, Grupo is said to be the finest and funkiest Latin orchestra to come out of the United States in the last decade. thm-snarkypuppySnarky Puppy

The buzzing 10 piece Funk/Jazz ensemble has been building momentum that peaked when they were awarded the Grammy for Best R&B Performance for the live recording “Something” featuring vocalist Lalah Hathaway. The once Texan, now New York-based, quasi-collective has gone from the best-kept secret to one of the most respected names in instrumental music. Although still “underground” in many respects, the band has earned high praise from critical stalwarts like the BBC, Village Voice, Guardian, and Boston Herald, and has performed at some of the best venues and festivals in Asia, Europe, Australia, and North America. The band has always used live performance as its chief form of evangelism, and maintains a more intense tour schedule than almost any band in the idiom. Over the course of 2013, Snarky Puppy gave almost 200 performances and workshops on four continents, including North Sea Jazz, Monterey Jazz Festival, Jazz á Vienne, Blue Note Tokyo, and the Melbourne International Jazz Festival. http://custom.bandframe.com/snarkypuppy

Claudia Villela

When people think of Brazilian music, the Samba and its daughter, the Bossa Nova, automatically come to mind. But in fact, Brazil is a land of an extraordinary variety and depth of musical styles, music with a range that speaks from the heart to the gamut of human emotions.
As a child in Rio de Janiero, Claudia Villela would fall asleep lulled by the music from a samba school that practiced nightly behind her grandparents’ home. “I woke up to the sound of my mother singing while my father played the harmonica,” she recalls. “My singing is the sum of all the music I’ve heard, from Brazilian baroque to bossa nova to free jazz, the nostalgic and modern. It comes from all those memories.” (continue …)

thm-nigelhallThe Nigel Hall Band

Jazz, Soul, and Funk…these are not just words to the young and immensely talented keyboardist and vocalist known as Nigel Hall. These are his three square meals each day. These are oxygen, water and love. The world of music is where Hall resides, and it is the reason for his every move. From the time he was a child, music, just as sunlight, has been the thing that wakes him up in the morning. When asked about himself, Nigel reflects, “I’m just someone who lives, eats, drinks music.” This becomes clear when Nigel takes the stage. http://www.royalfamilyrecords.com/nigelhall
